FAQs

how do I register as a carer?
There is no Carers Register.  If you are providing unpaid help & support to a family member, friend or neighbour who cannot manage without your help because of their illness, frailty, disability or addiction, then you are a carer.
Your GP practice may have carers register and you can ask them to include you on it.  It's also useful to ask how they help carers. If you are caring for someone and live in Fife it will be very useful for you to get in touch with Fife Carers Centre.

What is a carers support plan (formerly carers assessment)?

A Carers have a legal right to an assessment of their own needs if they provide, or intend to provide a substantial amount of care on a regular basis.  A carers support plan is an opportunity to discuss your caring situation and the sort of help that you need with caring.  You can also discuss any help that would maintain your own health and balance caring with other aspects of your life, work and family.  If you already known to Social Work you can request that they help you with this. If you are already referred to Fife Carers Centre and think a Carers Support Plan will be helpful for you please contact us to work with you on this.  If you are an unpaid carer in Fife and not already known to Fife Carers Centre you can refer yourself.
Am I entitled to any benefits?
You may have an entitlement to Carers Allowance or Carers Credit.  The person you care for may also qualify for benefits. Carer Support Workers at Fife Carers Centre will be able to help you determine your entitlements and to complete the application forms if you think you would find that helpful.
how do I get help with my caring role?
You can ask Social Work for an assessment of the needs of the person you are caring for by calling the contact centre on 03451 551503.  You can also purchase care yourself from a number of organisations operating in Fife.  The websites www.homecare.co.uk/ and the www.careinspectorate.com/ can help you gather information and make a choice.
How do I get help in an emergency?

Contact Social Work outside office hours on 03451 551503. Trained operators will log your call and relay your message to someone who can help.  If it is a medical emergency, call NHS 24 on 111 or, if the medical emergency is urgent, call 999.
To make sure people know who to contact in case of an emergency you can apply for a Carers Emergency Card from Fife Carers Centre.
